SUMMARY:Research Colloquium #6: Perceptual Audio Coders – What To Listen For
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER HERE\n\n\n\nPerceptual audio coding is ubiquitous and perceptual audio codecs like MP3 and AAC are widely known. It has fundamentally revolutionized the way how we transmit\, store and consume music\, fueling applications like Internet streaming and downloading of music. Perceptual audio coding combines elements from digital signal processing\, coding theory\, and psychoacoustics into one system. It is\, however\, mostly the use of psychoacoustic noise shaping techniques that frequently leads to questions from non-experts (“Is this signal really intact?”) and sometimes is even perceived as some kind of “black magic” within the coder. \n\n\n\nTo educate users and listeners\, the AES Technical Committee on Coding of Audio Signals (TC-CAS) has created educational material on “Perceptual Audio Codecs – What to Listen for”. It comprises tutorial information on the principles and limitations of perceptual audio coding technologies\, as well as curated listening examples to educate and train listeners to identify possible audio coding artifacts. \n\n\n\nOriginally published as a CD-ROM in 2001\, the material has been updated in content and functionality and been released as “The Second / Web Edition” for its 20th Anniversary in 2021. After the Web Edition has initially been exclusively available as an AES membership benefit\, it is available free of charge to the general public since February 2023 for the 75th Anniversary of the AES\, by courtesy of the AES and its Technical Committee on Coding of Audio Signals. \n\n\n\nIt is a useful resource for understanding the why’s and how’s of perceptual audio codecs\, containing a taxonomy of common types of codec artifacts\, as well as tutorial information on the background of each one. Example audio signals with different degrees of impairment illustrate the nature of the artifacts and help in training listener expertise. Jürgen Herre \n\n\n\nProf. Dr.-Ing. Jürgen Herre is a fellow member of the Audio Engineering Society (AES)\, co-chair of the AES Technical Committee on Coding of Audio Signals and vice chair of the AES Technical Council. \n\n\n\nHe received a degree in Electrical Engineering from Friedrich-Alexander-Universität in 1989 and a Ph.D. degree for his work on error concealment of coded audio in 1995. In 1989 he joined the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits (IIS) in Erlangen\, Germany\, and became a co-developer of the popular mp3 (MPEG-1/2 Audio Layer 3) codec. In 1995\, he joined Bell Laboratories for a PostDoc term working on the development of MPEG-2 Advanced Audio Coding (AAC). By the end of 1996 he went back to Fraunhofer to work on the development of more advanced multimedia technology including MPEG-4\, MPEG-7\, MPEG-D\, MPEG-H and MPEG-I\, currently as the Chief Executive Scientist for the Audio/Multimedia activities at Fraunhofer IIS\, Erlangen. In September 2010\, Prof. Dr. Herre was appointed professor at the University of Erlangen and the International Audio Laboratories Erlangen. He is an expert in low bit-rate audio coding/perceptual audio coding\, spatial audio coding\, parametric audio object coding\, perceptual signal processing and audio for Virtual and Augmented Reality (VR/AR). \n\n\n\n\n\nDr.-Ing. Sascha DickSascha Dick received his Dipl.-Ing. degree in Information and Communication Technologies from the Friedrich Alexander University (FAU) of Erlangen-Nuremberg\, Germany in 2011 with a thesis on an improved psychoacoustic model for spatial audio coding\, and joined the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits (IIS) in Erlangen\, Germany as a Research Engineer in the same year. He has contributed to the development and standardization of audio codecs such as MPEG-H 3D Audio. In 2017 he joined the International Audio Laboratories at FAU to research psychoacoustic effects for 3-Dimensional (3D) audio and has received a PhD degree for his thesis on “Psychoacoustic Effects and Models for Processing and Coding of 3-Dimensional Audio” in 2023. He has since joined Fraunhofer IIS again to further pursue research and development of 3D-audio applications. Interessant dieses Jahr ist die Zusammenlegung mit dem bereits im Süden unserer Republik etablierten jährlichen Event “Studioszene” mit vielen international besetzten Masterclasses im Bereich Musikproduktion. EIN Ticket gilt für beide Events. He will explain its simple calculations. A real-time demonstration will illustrate the almost magical result of the simple math. \n\n\n\nDan Dugan – CEO Dan Dugan Sound Design\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhen Dan was a child\, his parents took him to theater and concerts. He always wanted to go backstage to see the light board. In his teens he built a huge model circus and two small pipe organs. He was very active in music\, singing bass in choruses\, madrigal groups\, and his church choir. Dan studied math and physics in college but dropped out to work full-time in the theater doing lighting. That became his first career.At age 24 Dan specialized in theater sound\, working at the Old Globe in San Diego and ACT in San Francisco. The title “Sound Designer” was created in 1968 “to describe what Dan Dugan does.” He also provided sound services for eight seasons of the Mondavi Jazz Festival and engineered several independent record albums.Dan demonstrated the first effective automixer at the New York AES in 1974. Today his invention is commonly used (but not heard) in conferences\, talk shows\, news panels\, sports panels\, and election debates. The Cinema Audio Society gave Dan their 2018 Outstanding Product award. He received an Engineering Emmy in 2020.Dan does scientific research in the national parks\, making longitudinal studies of soundscapes over time. This time Philipp Reif a Recording Music Producer is invited to present mixing techniques for Live-Broadcasting for acoustical and classical music recording. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMixing consoles vs. In-the-box mixing for Live-Broadcasting for acoustical and classical music recordingIn-the-box mixing is by far the most common method of nowadays music production and allows the powerful approaches to detail automate a mix in the post production process. When it comes to balancing the faders during the recording process\, a Live-Broadcasting or Live-Streaming most of the sound engineers and music producers fear in-the-box mixing as „not being reliable enough“ and „missing workflows“ they are familiar with working on a dedicated mixing console. In this event Philipp Reif would like to show that there are almost no limitations in recording and mixing directly out of the DAW for Live-Broadcasts (Opera or symphony orchestra) anymore on the example of Merging Technologies DAW Pyramix and their dedicated Audio Interfaces. He is a classical music producer and sound engineer based in Berlin\, Germany\, working with distinguished artists and institutions for different labels (Deutsche Grammophon\, Sony Music\, Decca\, CPO\, Prospero etc.) and broadcasting companies like Rundfunk Berlin Brandenburg (RBB)\, Deutschlandfunk or Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR) in Munich. He was educated in classical piano and flute and works as Tonmeister and sound engineer in the fields of classical and acoustical music production. His philosophy is to unleash the individual artistic potential of every artist in the highest professional level to create artistic outstanding and ear-catching recordings both musically and technically . Therefore Philipp takes care that the musical interpretation of the artists is preserved best possible by being a creative intermediate between the music and complex recording technique with greatest in-depth knowledge in both fields. The choice of the microphones for a Tonmeister is similar to the choice of a painter which colors to mix to achieve an artwork of impressive perception. The difference of the Tonmeister’s job is to MIX TONE COLORS which are perceived by the ear. Eventually every recording is a unique artwork of the performing musicians in collaboration with the Tonmeister.

DESCRIPTION:The new AES Germany Research Colloquium aims to provide a platform to discourse on a specific audio topic and create a bridge between basic research\, manufacturers and users in audio technology. \n\n\n\nFrom mp3 to PARty. How signal processing\, psychoacoustics and machine learning fit together\n\n\n\nThe talk will start with a brief historical overview: How mp3 and other audio coding formats got developed. To advance this technology\, a lot of knowledge about our ears has been necessary. \n\n\n\nSince then\, we have learned much more about our ears and brain\, as well as how we listen to the world around us. Cognitive effects have become more and more important. We really hear what we expect to hear. All this has been used in a lot of research over the years. \n\n\n\nCurrently\, an important topic of our research in Ilmenau is finding out how we can reproduce immersive sound\, the feeling of “being there”\, over headphones. After approximately 50 years of research by others and contributions from myself\, we can finally claim that we have solved this problem. The process of how we achieved it and what means we used will be included in the talk. \n\n\n\nThe talk will conclude by presenting ideas about future applications that may initially sound like science fiction\, such as PARty\, but we are working to transform them into reality. \n\n\n\nProf. Dr.-Ing. Karlheinz Brandenburg – CEO of Brandenburg Labs GmbH and Senior Professor at the Institute of Media Technology at Technische Universität Ilmenau\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKarlheinz Brandenburg received the Dipl.-Ing. and Dipl.-Math. degrees in electrical engineering and mathematics and the Dr.-Ing. degree in electrical engineering from the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität (FAU)\, Erlangen-Nürnberg\, Germany. He is currently Senior Professor at TU Ilmenau\, Germany and CEO of Brandenburg Labs GmbH\, a startup company specializing in immersive audio technologies. Following times as a Postdoctoral Member of Technical Staff at AT&T Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill\, USA and again FAU he joined the Fraunhofer IIS\, Erlangen\, as head of the Audio and Multimedia Department. He is the founding director of the Fraunhofer IDMT\, Ilmenau where he retired in 2019.
